Summary: In 1974 the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations issued a report entitled The Impact of Multinational Corporations on Development and on International Relations, in which the majority of a group of 'eminent persons' reached the conclusion that multinational corporations and developing countries' interests were fundamentally opposed, while a minority held that in most essential respects they converged. This constituted the starting-point for a group of academics in Geneva to organise a conference on 'Multinational Enterprise in a Hostile World' to which a number of academics, businessmen and international civil servants were invited. This book is composed of the six main papers which were presented at the conference, the twelve papers offered by the discussants, a general summary of the conference proceedings, and a general introductory essay on the theme of the conference by the editors.
