By: Material type: TextTextPublication details: New Delhi; Criterion Pub.; 1988Description: 326pSubject(s): DDC classification:

Summary: The study, deals with the phenomenon of "party-building" at the state level within a national framework. It critically narrates the rise, growth, differentiation and election performance of the political parties. The analysis has been related to the social base of politics, and inferences have been drawn on the extent of political modernisation. The dynamics of party system show that factionalism, defection, corruption, ideological ambiguity, leadership conflict etc.continue to be the inherent weaknesses of almost all the parties. But they have also contributed towards a process of political development as well. They have worked towards a definite change in the level of political socialisation, interest articulation, interest aggregation and political communi- cation of the state. There have been periods of political stagnation, uncertainty and instability in the state. However, this is not a contribution of an inefficient party system only.
