Summary, etc. THIS BOOK is the third edition<br/>of Dr. Ghurye's famous work<br/>Caste and Race in India, published<br/>in 1932 in the History of Civiliza-<br/>tion Series.<br/>The history of the<br/>ancient and mediæval forms of the<br/>institution of caste as told in that<br/>book has now become generally<br/>accepted. The analysis of the<br/>then<br/>recent and<br/>contemporary trends in caste, which<br/>was not palatable to many because of its<br/>frankness, has been proved by<br/>later events to be too true. The<br/>viewpoint that caste is only an<br/>exaggerated aspect of class, set out<br/>in the book almost for the first<br/>time, has become current among<br/>sociologists. As a study in privileg-<br/>ed grouping the book has an inter-<br/>national appeal. In view of the<br/>truth of the author's previous<br/>diagnosis and prognosis of this ins-<br/>titution his analysis and exhortation<br/>embodied in the fresh chapter on<br/>Scheduled Castes and the last one<br/>on Class must command respectful<br/>attention.<br/>This new edition also includes an<br/>up-to-date chapter on Race which<br/>was dropped in the earlier one.
