Caste and class in india

Ghurye, G. S.

Caste and class in india - 2nd ed. - Bombay Popular Book 1957 - 316p.

THIS BOOK is the third edition
of Dr. Ghurye's famous work
Caste and Race in India, published
in 1932 in the History of Civiliza-
tion Series.
The history of the
ancient and mediƦval forms of the
institution of caste as told in that
book has now become generally
accepted. The analysis of the
then
recent and
contemporary trends in caste, which
was not palatable to many because of its
frankness, has been proved by
later events to be too true. The
viewpoint that caste is only an
exaggerated aspect of class, set out
in the book almost for the first
time, has become current among
sociologists. As a study in privileg-
ed grouping the book has an inter-
national appeal. In view of the
truth of the author's previous
diagnosis and prognosis of this ins-
titution his analysis and exhortation
embodied in the fresh chapter on
Scheduled Castes and the last one
on Class must command respectful
attention.
This new edition also includes an
up-to-date chapter on Race which
was dropped in the earlier one.
