NOBODY could be more conscious than myself of the omissions in this volume. I am especially conscious that I have said very little of Augustine's philosophy, of the implications and influence of The City of God, and of his doctrine of the Church as a rule of faith. But a full discussion of these matters would make a very large instead of a very small book; and they have been discussed elsewhere, often with talent and sometimes with genius, while there is still room for a simple account of Augustine's personal life and background.
