This book, containing thirteen essays, attempts to address the major issues of contemporary importance. It includes analyses of the relevance of social democracy in societal reconstruction, the position of European Union in the emerging global system, an Indian perspective of Austria, the British collaboration in the US invasion of Iraq, the case of reforming the United Nations, implications of globalization for developing countries, the Scandinavian Welfare State model, the relative positions of the deterrence doctrine, and its alternative the Common Security doctrine as guarantors of peace and security, Tibet's struggle for freedom, India's public sector, India's language problem, and, free India's achievements when the country celebrated the silver jubilee of its independence. It also throws light on the frightening anxieties with which a person like Indira Gandhi has lived through when she was out of power between 1977 and 1980, especially after she came to know about the decision of the Janata Party government to hold a fresh enquiry into the bomb blast in Patna, in January 1975, in which L.N.WIishra, then Railway Minister, was assassinated.
