Eighth General Elections to the Lok Sabha in India held in December 1984 was a sensational one. The present volume attempts to identify the causes for the thumping majority to the Congress (1) in almost all States except in Andhra Pradesh.
The place of National political parties, the role of regional interests, caste politics, money and communalism were assessed in these papers. The electoral behaviour in various states is measured. An attempt is made to analyse the sympathy wave, the failure of the national poli tical parties, the strength regionalism, the lea dership of Young Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi who led the Congress (I) to the unpreceuted victory in elections. I am sure that these papers will be found useful to the students of political science in Indian Universities.
