Summary: For success of cooperatives, besides various factors a proper legal framework designed in accordance with Cooperative Principles and ideology is essential. Needless to say that the roles of functionaries as provided under the Law go a long way in ensuring effectiveness. An attempt has been made through this study to examine the adequacy of the roles of functionaries responsible for cooperative management under the prevailing enactments in various Asian countries, and to identify provisions thwarting smooth functioning in actual situations. The study may prove useful for policy-makers, professionals and researchers in the field of Cooperative and Rural Development.
