New farm technology and income distribution

Summary: Indian Agriculture has witnessed re volutionary changes during the last 25 years or so. Introduction of New Biological-chemical farm technology around 1966 has succeeded in trans forming subsistence farming into commercial farming. Definitely, Indian Agricultural production is better off today than what it was 25 years ago, particularly in food pro duction. India has emerged from the stage of large scale importer of foodgrains to the level of being an exporter. It is the miracle of the Green Revolution, or the application of New Technology to farm produc tion. There are very important implica tions of the New technological appli cation to agriculture. particularly sociological. It is said that the application of agricultural techno logy has led to the emergence of affluence in the ocean of misery. Rich people have become richer and the poor poorer. The present study investigates the distributional impact of the Green Revolution, and finds that though New Technology augments farm income. it widens inequality in income distribution. The study has taken into account also non-farm households of villages in order to have a fuller and more realistic idea of income distribution. Special tools used for the study are Gini Ratio and Lorenz curve, Finally, the study is a useful guide to policy makers of our country who are wedded to building up an egalitarian socialistic State. The study is also useful to research scholars and post graduate students.
