Summary: Law is the basic framework of a civilized society. The society, more so modern society, is basically a chain in which humans beings interact with one another exchange, share, buy and sell commodities and services. In this inter se scenario, there are instances where man, propelled by self-interest for financial, emotional or social gain, might adopt unfair and illegitimate means to get the better of those with whom he interacts. This is what made it necessary that the social structure be governed by a set of rules that are fair and impartial, and that apply to all irrespective of status or hierarchy. These codified rules are what are called 'law of the land'; and it is mandatory for all to obey the law in a civilized society. It, therefore, becomes important that 'the man in the street' knows what is the law and does not violate it, because violation of the code would lead to an action by the authorities and the offender would be punished. Law is what the lawyers argue before the courts and what is adjudicated by the judges after hearing the evidence and examining the set of facts. This book introduces the common man to the basics of law.
