Summary: The Multinational Corporation is an emerging actor on the international stage with the power and strength exceeding those of many nation-States, so much so, serious doubts are being entertained among Statesmen and Jurists about the relevance of concepts such as sovereignty and independence of States. The Transnational Corporations, as the author chooses to call them, in line with the current practice of the United Nations, have posed many major problems in the fields of political relations, economic independence and international law. This book which has won a Doctorate in International Economic Law from the Jawaharlal Nehru University is unique, in that -It is the first of its kind written from a developing country with a focus on inter national and legal aspects on the subject of M.N. Co. -it is the first book which examines, in depth, the impact of Multinational Corporations from every angle, namely, political, economic, social, environmental and legal, with due emphasis on problems. relating to technology transfer and restrictive trade practices; -it has covered a wealth of facts and figures from primary sources such as UN documents, Senate hearings of the US, important tribunals, important judgements of courts and hearings of Security and Exchange Commission of US, and Reports of Financial committees in India; -examines in detail the various legal and administrative control devices by nations and International agencies both, at the regional and at the UN level, and offers suggestions in a practical manner of the limitations and potentialities of the national and international institutions; -the risks and dangers to which a developing nation would be exposing itself by extending an open invitation to the multinationals which are constantly changing the strategies.
