This is based on the investigation and findings by the NHRC in which both of them contributed their best. This we share partly to heal ourselves and partly to document a truth. As you read, lot of questions arise and do we have, even today, satisfactory answers? The heinous act which snuffed out fifty nine innocent lives deserves to be condemned in the strongest possible terms. No provocation, whatever be its nature, could explain the bestiality of the act and those responsible should be dealt with the most severe punishment under law. There can be no two opinions on this count. Who were behind this dastardly crime? While writing this narrative, both authors have expressed going through a kind of therapeutic healing process besides also documenting a truth. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED READING FOR EVERY INDIAN CITIZEN WHO BELIEVES: "that an evil deed committed anywhere in India is the concern of every other Indian (Gandhiji: Harijan, 1947). About the Authors: PGJ Nampoothiri, Gagan Sethi After graduation in Civil Engineering, Mr P G J Nampoothiri joined the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1964 and was allotted to the Gujarat Cadre. During his thirty four years of service, he had worked as Superintendent of Police in Junagadh, Godhra and Vadodara and as Commissioner of Police at Ahmedabad. He was on deputation to the Central Bureau of Investigation for fourteen years and served in various capacities. After retirement as Director General of Police, Gujarat in 1998, he took up the assignment as Special Rapporteur to the National Human Rights Commission kr Gujarat and continued till March, 2007. He is a recipient of the Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the President's Medal for Distinguished Service. Presently he is settled in Thrissur, Kerala
