Summary: Geopolitics as a concept of learning is as old as civilisation. But due to the absence of a sys tematic growth of theory, it could not be developed into a mature discipline. This work is an at tempt not only to develop a systematic theory for geopolitical studies, but, at the same time, to trace the basic principles which are the driving force behind the growth of entire human civil isation. The development of geogra phical and historical studies dep ends upon the growth of science and technology in a congenial so cial, economic and political set-up. Predictably, the nature of geopo litical studies has undergone a basic change with the passage of time. From the era of oceanic discoveries, the civilisation has moved on to the realm of space science and exploration of oceanic resources. In order to determine the contours of such studies diverse aspects of learn ing are to be taken into consider ation. This work is a meeting place of Geography, Philosophy, History, Political Science, Space Science and Oceanography. From this viewpoint this book is a pio neering study.
