Summary: Non-governmental organizations (NGOs), in this era of globalization, have gained popularity for work in the developmental fields, such as health, education, income generation, environment, micro finance, social forestry, rural development, etc. Although not meant to replace the State, NGOs may perform complementary, as well as supplementary, roles. At the same time, NGOs encounter difficulties, as well as criticisms, at the organizational level. It is against this backdrop that this book analyzes the present developmental efforts of NGOs in India, with one study looking at Bangladesh. The first section of the book deals with the developmental facets of NGOs, while the second section examines the organizational aspects. The book points out how far NGOs can contribute in developmental efforts in India and to what extent the State depends upon them in this age of globalization.
