THE FIRST study in depth of the emergence and growth of surplus manpower in agriculture and its impact on farm output and economic development, based on a wealth of techno-economic data, this book is an outstanding contribution to economic literature.
The second part studies. the consequences of the growth of surplus manpower in an unplanned economy. This part has two sections: historical and theoretical. The historical section examines. the principal trends in Indian agriculture, and the other section constructs a simple theoretical model designed to throw into relief the main processes set in motion by the growth of surplus labour and its bearing on the agricultural sector and on the economy as a whole.
The last part deals with the implications of a surplus labour force for development planning in the context of (1) the utilisation of surplus labour in agriculture for economic development; (2) the mobilisation of the agricultural marketable sur plus; (3) inflationary implications; and (4) the choice of technique in agriculture.
The appendixes contain a wealth of information on surplus casual labourers, aggregate, optional and obligatory marketable surpluses, techniques employed in the agriculture of India and China, the causes of the growth of surplus manpower in Indian agriculture, and on agrarian reforms in India.
