The interaction between tradition and development offers vast field for study. Tradition may retard development or it may promote it. In some cases tradition itself may be neutral. To discuss the interplay between tradition and development in the context of Indian social scene, 'Tradition and Development' was chosen as theme for the Seminar organised by A.N. Sinha Institite of Social Studies, Patna, as part of its Silver Jubilee Celebrations in 1985. A large number of scholars from different parts of India took part in the deliberations and presented papers. This volume contains the papers presented by the participants the Seminar.
The papers deal with the changes in the villages consequent to community development and Panchyati Raj programmes, tradition and development the context of tribal societies, socio-economic conditions of Scheduled Castes, women and children. Subjects like colonial legacy and higher education, exploitation migration labour, changes communication media, etc., have also been discussed.
The volume should prove interesting and useful not only scholars in ealms sociology and anthropology but also to who actively engaged in the round development of country.
