This book focuses on the problem of employment among weaker sec tions in India. In particular, the emphasis is on Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes the two economically backward and socially retarded groups in the country. These two groups constitute the core among the weaker sections in the country. The study deals with some of their characteristics as compared to the general population in the country, their participation in work, unemployment and a critical review of Plan schemes which are designed to help them. Attempt has been made to put together as much evidence as possible from several sources including censuses, surveys and several other studies.
This study touches upon only a small portion of the research activity that needs to be undertaken on weaker sections in India, particularly on Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. This has been one of the most neglected areas of research activity and at the same time it is a fertile area for further investigation by researchers. The study emphasises the need for more in-depth studies using data both from secondary sources and primary investigations as well,
