The role of rural banking in the Indian economy has grown spectacularly since 1969. Outstanding credits of commercial banking in agriculture alone are already about Rs. 6000 crores ($6 billion) and they are on the increase. Rural banking in India has assumed significance not only because of its magnitude but also because its operations are being closely studied by other developing countries, particularly in Asia and Africa.
Most of the writing on this subject so far has been produced by people with little or no field experience. RURAL BANKING ADRIFT is based on first-hand knowledge of day-to-day bank ing operations in the villages. It reviews current rural banking and development and points the way to a more meaningful programme for the future.
