Summary: This volume has been a long time in preparation. That is entirely our fault and we wish to thank Harvester Wheatsheaf Press, and a succession of editors, for their patience. In part the delay has been due to the fact that textbooks always go to the bottom of the list of priorities and so much else seems to happen just when it comes to drafting new material. But we have also been conscious that environmental economics and, indeed, environmental thinking in general, has been changed rapidly in the past few years. There has repeatedly been the need, therefore, to dispense with first drafts and start again.
