Population and occupational traits correlate with community size. The larger cities have propor tionately a higher ratio in the active work force and fewer retired and young people. Metropolitan centers attract a far larger pro portion of long distance migrants, both those from abroad and those who migrate within the United States Jobs are more highly spe cialized in the city, the markets for goods and services broader, thus making for a greater diversity of skills among the urban popu lation. The number of white collar occupations is directly related to the size of the community. The greater diversification of skills stems from the higher educational level among the urban inhabi tants. There are more women in the work force. Children are more expensive to raise and their economic retum lower.
