Economists and the Govt. have been exercised for a long time over the issue of the sharing of productivity gains between. the managements and their workers. It is doubtlessly recognised that while this 'sharing' helps considerably in raising the living standards and working efficiency of the labour force, it results in no less palpable gains to the entrepreneurs. In fact, the ultimate beneficiary is the Industrial unit itself where such arrangement really exists. an

The thesis attempts to assess the situation as it obtained in the Sugar Industry from the year 1951 to 1974. With an analysis of the trends in factor productivities and sharing of productivity gains, it establishes relationship between the workers' earnings and the associated variables like cost of living, labour productivity etc. It also provides a framework of planning. for higer productivity and sharing of productivity gains in the Indian Industry. Suggestions for an Action Plan at the unit level to revolutionise productivity have been duly included in the study.
