Summary: This work is the first economic almanac of Chins to be published since the founding of the People's Republic of Chins. At the beginning of 1980, all units participating in the Economic Re search Centre of the State Council decided to edi and publish this Almanac of China's Economy With the support and cooperation of all ministries and commissions of the State Council and of the people's governments at provincial and municipal levels and in all autonomous regions, and thanks to the active efforts of staff members of the Econo mic Management Magazine, this almanae is at last ready for its readers. With the support of Japanese and American friends, the Japanese and English editions of the book are also being published. Comrades and friends both at home and abroad who are concerned about the development of China's economy should welcome this book. Under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, the Chinese people overcame many hard ships and difficulties, overthrew the three big mountains of imperialism, feudalism and bureaucrat-capitalism, emerged victorious in the revolution and, in 1949, founded the People's Re public of China. During the past 31 years, we have been carrying out socialist revolution and socialist construction in our poor, backward, and over populated country and have won unprecedented successes. However, our revolutionary path has not always gone smoothly. It has gone through many twists and turns and we have experienced successes as well as failures along the way. After the smashing of the counter revolutionary cliques of Lin Biao and Jiang Qing, the party's correct line was re-established along with the principle of readjustment, restructuring, consolidation and improvement formulated at the Third Plenary Session of the Party's 11th Central Committee. Thus, a new historical period began, emphasizing economic construction. Over the past two years a tremendous amount of work has been done. A series of principles and policies were for mulated and experiences and lessons gleaned from economic construction during the past 30 years were summed up. As a result, China's socialist construc don has embarked on a new road of seeking truth from facts. So far, it has been advancing steadily. At this historic turning point, it is of great significance for us to edit and publish the first economic almanac since the founding of the People's Republic.
