Summary: As the Indian business history is still at its infancy, competent historical works in this field can be counted on one's fingers. Barring a few studies published recently, all that we have are a few souvenir volumes and biographies of prominent figures in the business world. Banking history has suffered particular neglect with the result that we know precious little about the romance and ordeal experienced by individual firms in their process of growth. And in the absence of empirical studies, our understanding of the general picture leaves much to be desired. The present work is of a pioneering nature as it opens up new vistas for research i in one of the most significant-and neglected-areas. Tracing the genesis and growth of the largest nationalized bank in India, it throws a significant light on the banking developments in the country. More importantly it provides valuable in sight into the business developments in princely India and the process of transition from a feudal system to the modern age. It is, thus, more than a banking history; it is a study in social change. Towards A New Frontier is perhaps the only banking history which has been written by a competent business historian. It, therefore, bears the synthesizing focus of history. Based on archival sources, company records and participants' observation and written in lucid and forceful style, the book will be of interest to the scholar, the management practitioner as well as the general reader.
