Since I was nine years old, I have been engaged in business. Through my
long business life I have thought Since I was nine years old, I have been
my about man and society. Seeing the miserable state of Japanese soCiety just
after World War II with my own eyes prompted me, in 1946, to found PHP
lnstitute, whose purpose is to seek peace, happiness, and prosperity tor
the world. Also at that time l began a formal study of man's ideal role
in society. Through this study, my thoughts on man gradually evolved...
The nature of man and the direc- tion mankind should take are themes
the too great to be discussed fully in the course of even a thousand books.
Indeed, all over the world many studies have been made and copious
books published concerning these topics. To further discussion and
thought on the question, "What is man and how should he act in socie-
ty? as well as to introduce a new perspective on this age-old query, T
decided to publish Ningen o Kangaeru (Thoughts on Man) in English so it
could be shared by people outside Japan.
