Despite the 1987 arms deal between the super powers, President Reagan insists that the USSR is still 'the Evil Empire'. Someone who would whole heartedly agree with him is the Count de Marenches, head of the French equivalent of M16 for eleven years up to 1981. Described by Henry Kissinger as one of the world's foremost strategic thinkers, Marenches has now, in a disturbing book based on interviews with the leading French journalist Christine Ockrent, put forward a chal lenging view on the invisible war' we are involun tarily fighting the East-West conflict which lies - hidden beneath the cloak of the spirit of Glasnost. He also speaks out on the wars in the Middle East, on African relations, on Cambodia and Libya, on terrorism and on the Greenpeace affair. Finally, he outlines a master plan for the West.
In the past Marenches had an uncanny knack of being proved right. He warned the Vatican, before May 1981, of the Soviet desire to be rid of 'this meddlesome priest', the Pope; he predicted, within forty-eight hours, the outbreak of the Yom Kippur war; and late in 1979 he advised an American journalist that Kabul would be a likely spot for some action. As the journalist's plane landed, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan began.
Over the years statesmen from many lands have sought his advice: from the Shah of Iran to President Anwar al-Sadat of Egypt; from King Hassan II of Morocco to King Juan Carlos of Spain. When Marenches talks, leaders listen. This book strategic analysis at the highest level, and a window on clandestine operations - will provide the West with a fascinating insight into world affairs.
