Summary: In this book Dr. Mangat provides for the first time a detailed analysis of the historical process whereby the scattered Asian commercial popula tion along the East African Coast was transformed-in association with the British effort in the area-into a major 'settlement' in the interior. Based on extensive research into the original sources, the book examines fully the economic, political, and social impli cations of Asian immigration into East Africa during the colonial period. The resulting problems posed by the often conflicting demands of an emerg ing plural society and the manner in which they were dealt with have a direct bearing upon an understanding of the position of the Asian minority in independent East Africa.
