The second edition of this book contains articles on the different facts of the "Save Himalaya Movement" which is now gaining strength. The origins of this movement can be traced to the spirit of sacrifice of illiterate women in the Garhwal Himalaya. Just as women protect children, they decided to protect the trees of the forest which confer the same benefits as mothers do to children. The Chipko move ment is a symbol of the determination of the local people who know that their future as well as the future of their children and grand children are intimately interwined with the maintenance of forest eco-systems.
