Summary: A form of regional economic cooperation that has gained rapid acceptance in Asia during the past decade, growth triangles bring together the resources of neighboring countries to foster economic development. The papers in this collection focus on six cases: the first, and longest-established, growth triangle covers southern China, Hong Kong and Taipei,China; the second has developed on the borders of Singapore, the Indonesian province of Riau, and the Malaysian state of Johor; the third is in the Tumen River Delta, on China's northeast border with Russia and North Korea; the fourth incorporates Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Myanmar, Thailand, Viet Nam, and Yunnan province in the People's Republic of China, into the Greater Mekong Subregion; the fifth is the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia Philippines-East ASEAN Growth Area; and the sixth is the Indonesia-Malaysia Thailand Growth Triangle. The first edition of this book was the outcome of the Workshop on Growth Triangles in Asia, held in Manila in February 1993. This extensively updated edition, which includes three new chapters, defines, explores, and debates the issues surrounding the establishment and development of growth triangles and discusses their potential. The contributors are all regional scholars, well-known for their experience and expertise in the field.
