Summary: Unlike most other books on Soviet foreign policy which deal with it issue wise and time-wise, this book covers. the entire subject within an academic framework. While reviewing develop ments in Soviet foreign policy during the period 1917-1990, an attempt is made to highlight the process that goes into its making. This is followed by a study of its instrumentalities like diplomacy, aid and trade. A compre hensive examination of the record of Soviet foreign policy region-wise and time-wise is provided with special emphasis on Soviet policy in Asia in general and Indo-Soviet relations in particular. Major issues in Soviet foreign policy, both traditional and contemporary, are investigated. The current phase of Soviet foreign policy initiated by Gorbachev's Perestroika and New Thinking in international relations is discussed bringing the policy review to the beginning of the nineties. A thematic list of suggested readings is included for those who may like to probe the subject further. Not strictly planned as a research based book, it has nevertheless materi alised out of the practical experience of teaching and research of the author on the subject for about three decades in universities and institutes in India and abroad. The result is one com pact book on the entire panorama of Soviet foreign policy which is aca demic in essence and communicative in style. Hence it is indispensable as a textbook on Soviet foreign policy for university students and researchers, and as a reference book for others interested in the subject.
