Summary: This volume consists of the papers presented at the Conference on Agricul tural Development in China, Japan and Korna, held from December 17-20, 1980. at Academia Sinica in Taipei. Altogether twenty three papers were presented: three on Japan, three on Korea, six on Mainland China, nine on Taiwan, and two comparative analyses. As initiators of the Conference, we tried to solicit papers to discuss, for. each of the above countries, the following aspects of agricultural development in modern times: (1) a quantitative analysis of the input-output relations of agricul tural production; (2) an examination of the development of agricultural institutions and policies; and (3) an analysis of the sectoral interdependence between agricul ture and industry. In addition, we also invited two scholars to prepare com parative analyses, one for Taiwan, Japan and Korea, and the other for Mainland China and Taiwan. We felt that such historical, institutional, quantitative and comparative analyses could provide a useful perspective in which current agri cultural problems might be identified and examined not only for the three countries under discussion but for the developing countries in general.
