Summary: Involvement of the United States, China and Russia in Central Asia has greatly increased after the 9/11 terrorist attack. Russia views the region as its traditional sphere of influence because of its strong ties with countries in Central Asia. China has had a stake in the region via trade routes for centuries but has recently made a concerted effort to apply its influence. Though there are a number of problems faced by the countries of Central Asia, the key issues for the region include terrorism, crime, drug trafficking, trade, border disputes, stable governance, role of co-operative security organisations, etc. The present book is the outcome of a symposium organised by the Foreign Military Studies Office (FMSO) of the US Army's Training and Doctrine Command with the aim of analysing the Chinese perspective on the area's problems and potential solution with its new great game. The chapters have been written by top-level researchers and analysts in the field, focusing on topics such as China's Central Asia policy, security of Central Asia and its impact on China, strategic adjustments and counter measures against extremist forces, relations between China and Central Asian states, SCO and China-India relations, and common interests of US and China. All these topics on various aspects of Chinese relations with the Central Asian countries have made the book very informative for politicians, administrators, defence analysts and academicians.
