Summary: The volume addresses the conceptual, theoretical and substantiveissues related to livelihood, education, health and displacement oftribal people in the north central sub-region of India. The tribalpeople are not only extremely marginalised in the area of educationand health but also do not have easy access to these. Theinfrastructure pertaining to these specific spheres in thissub-region is extremely dismal and the inequality in this spherevis-a-vis the general population is too stark. Alternate models ofeducation and health have been suggested to promote equity. The volume discusses how the tribal people have suffered morethan any other group from displacement caused on account ofacquisition of their land and how the dispossession from their landcombined with the dismal record of their rehabilitation has led todisintegration of tribal society, loss of identity and economicimpoverishment. The volume also discusses the nature of environmentdegradation in tribal areas and the social injustice caused to thetribal people on account of it. The failure of a regulatorymechanism to protect the environment and apathy of democraticinstitutions to take up the grievances of tribal people in thisregard worsens their plight. Finally, the volume criticallyexamines the development policies and programmes for the tribalpeople with special comments on the Draft National Policy.
