By: Material type: TextTextPublication details: Mumbai; CMIE; 2000Description: 487 pSubject(s): DDC classification:
  • 338.9 ECO
Summary: The information has been presented in an analytical framework to facilitate a quick appreciation of the changes over time and comparisons with the aggregates or averages. The data is presented in quinquiennal periods 1980 through 1995 and for a later period, wherever available. Data on 46 indicators are presented for each district covering population, agriculture, minerals, energy, transport and communications, industry, banking, health and education. Major towns are also covered represented by population and broad economic activities. The names of the Lok Sabha constituency along with the electorates therein as of January 1998 is also presented for each of the districts covered in this volume. Share in India and ranking within the 411 districts covered for six key indicators is presented for the year 1995. The document also presents an Index of the Relative Level of Development of Infrastructure in a district. The Index combines, with appropriate weights and normalisation, the level of development of the energy, transport, irrigation, communication, financial and social sector infrastructure in a district. Any compilation of the kind presented in this volume will involve a degree of inexactness. Over the two decades covered in the presentations, districts have been sub-divided or merged. Lok Sabha constituencies do not always map to districts. Time periods refered do not exactly match for all districts. In spite of these practical limitations, the volume presents a wealth of reliable data.
