Summary: In the international business world joint ventures abroad are a relative ly new phenomenon. This book is a response to this trend and seeks to clarify the various basic issues involved for the investor and the host country, particularly, the latter. For it is of crucial importance to the success of international joint ventures, that a very careful study of the needs, policies and develop ment plans of the host country be made. The first chapter explains the moti vation for foreign investment and the issues that need to be negotiated before the parties enter into a collaboration which include packaged versus unpackaged technology, price of technolo gy and amount of foreign equity participation. The chapter on Benefit-Cost Appraisal of foreign investments examines the chief concerns of the host country with regard to foreign investment which in turn affect decisions relating to mix of foreign and local manage rial personnel, employment policies for expatriates, distributional effects of foreign investment, effects on the balance of payments. There is a chapter each on five Asean countries; Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. The broad aspects covered include; geographical features, natural re sources, population and distribution of labour force by industry, in frastructural facilities, GNP, trade and balance of payments, state role in industry, foreign investment policy, role of foreign investiment e ployment of expatriates, legisla tion and business taxation, incen tives for investment.
