Summary: The Russian Institute was established by Columbia University in 1946 to serve two major objectives: the training of a limited number of well-qualified Americans for scholarly and profes sional careers in the field of Russian studies, and the develop ment of research in the social sciences and the humanities as they relate to Russia and the Soviet Union. The research program of the Russian Institute is conducted through the efforts of its faculty members, of scholars invited to participate as Senior Fellows, and of candidates for the Certificate of the Institute and for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Of the books that are a direct outgrowth of the research program, some are presented in the Studies of the Russian Institute of Columbia University. Other materials-research monographs, anthologies, bibliographies, memoirs and other archival records, and, in general, materials of scholarly in terest-are published as Russian Institute Occasional Papers. The faculty of the Institute, without necessarily agreeing with the conclusions reached in these works, believe that they merit publication. The financial assistance given by the Rockefeller Foundation to the research and publication program of the Russian In stitute is gratefully acknowledged.
