Based on the principler of the World Conservation Strategy and Caring for the Earth, IUCN supports the preparation and implementation of strategies for sustainability in response to requests from governme communities and NGOs. The Strategies for Sustainability Programme of the IUCN Secretariat and the Working Group on Strategies of the IUCN Commission on Environmental Strategy and Planning (CESP) assist those involved in strategies through a programme aimed at:
• undertaking conceptual development and exchange and analysis of experience concerning strategies throughout the world; carrying out demonstration and testing of key elements, tools and methodologies in strategies
building regional networks of strategy practitioners; and strengthening local capacity by engaging the networks in conceptual development, exchange and analysis of experience, and demonstration activities. The programme draws on experience with all types of strategies regardless of their sources of support.
Working group members include practitioners i national conservation strategies, national environmental action plans, other national strategies, international strategies, and a wide range of provincial (state) and local strategies.
