It is now becoming increasingly important to develop among the participants of the collective bar gaining, particularly the trade union leadership, a capacity for a better understanding of various issues af fecting the welfare of labour and getting acquainted with the tools used by researchers in investigat ing specific labour problems and understanding the utility of these tools as applicable to situations facing union leadership in the day -to-day work with and for the rank and file.

The book "Sweat of Labour" is infact a manual meant primarily for the middle level trade unionists. The objective of the manual is to provide opportunities, for example to the trade union activists, to get into a study environment and to get exposed to different branches of knowledge considered useful for trade union work and further allow them to think for themselves. The manual envisages that the readers could apply themselves scientifi cally to the problems on and off the field and may refer back to the experts such difficulties as they may encounter in this work for appropriate guidance. The manual endeavours to provide the readers a broad outline of research meth odology, data collection and data interpretation of practical impor tance to workers in the framework of Indian economy and labour.

The book may be useful even to the students of labour research and education.
