In this volume, revised, updated versions of three papers presented to a major international conference on 'South Asia as a Dynamic Partner: Prospects for Future', held on 25-27 May 1992 in New Delhi, are reproduced from its proceedings. The proceedings of the conference have been published as a separate volume 'South Asia as a Dynamic Partner' edited by Dr S P Gupta, Dr William E James and Dr Robert K McCleery. In addition, an article exclusively written for this volume attempts to indicate the future patterns of cooperation among South Asian countries. Together, these articles cover almost all the aspects of intra-South Asian cooperation as well as between South Asia and other neighbouring groupings such as ASEAN and the Asia-Pacific regions.
A significant contribution to literature on South Asia, the volume puts forward a programme of action for diversification of South Asian cooperation. Analytical, incisive, and by and large exhaustive, the discussions on the South Asian issues are supported by tabulated data. In his Foreword, Dr. K. B. Lall, former Chairman, ICRIER and Vice-President, Indian Council for South Asian Cooperation (ICSAC), writes:
"This book is the result of joint efforts by the four authors. It contains a wealth of information, ideas and insights. It establishes convincingly that South Asia's potential for economic growth and social progress is high, and dynamic forces are at work in all the member states.
