Summary: Studies in Economic Problems is a collection of research and discussion papers, prepared by the Research Wing of the Department of Economics, University of Calcutta, during the period 1959-1961. Each of them had the benefit of being read and discussed at the Seminar of the members of the teaching and research staff of the Department. Altogether nineteen papers have been incorporated in this volume. Of them, two papers are on specific problems of agriculture dealing, respec tively, with problems of investment, and of taxation, of the agricultural sector; two papers are on concepts and problems of labour productivity in the industrial sector; as many as six of them are on various problems connected with foreign trade and payments, viz. export promotion, parti cularly, the export of tea, terms of trade, bilateral payments agreements and the scarcity of foreign exchange resources; four papers are specifi cally on the financial aspects-two on banking, and one each on taxation and public enterprises respectively; the rest of the papers, save one, are concerned with the broad and general problems of growth and stability of the economy, in their historical, analytic, and empirical or statistical settings; only one concentrates on the statistical and economic problems connected with the construction of cost of living index numbers.
