India has a rich and varied natural heritage with vast land, mountains, rivers, valleys, sea shore, etc.-full of all the varieties of fauna and flora found all over the world.
This natural heritage is now under heavy pres sure because of rapid population increase, deforestration generated by the greed of the forest mafia, pollution of water and air caused by untreated sewage, sullage and industrial effluents, decimation of wild life by poching and hunting. List is not exhaustive. Many more causes can be added to this list.
It is now vital that our entire society develops new outlook, awareness, attitudes, under standing and ethos about the environment. Our administrators learn land planning: tackle pollu tion; save the varied animal and plant species; conserve and develop environment and protect it from further degradation in its various forms like soil erosion, desertification, siltation, sedimentation, etc.
This book is an attempt to create an awareness about the rich and varied natural heritage of the country among our administrators, planners, economists, sociologists and all the enlightended citizens and to highlight some of the attempts made in this direction to improve the environment thereby to suggest further ways of improving it.
