Citizenship is one of the distinguishing characteristics of modern state. Various theories have been propounded to study the diverse dimensions of citizenship. Prominent theories of citizenship include, Republican and Liberal, Contemporary Liberal, Marxist and Feminist. Within the theoretical framework, comprehensive and critical study have been made particularly those of T.H. Marshall, Anthony Giddens and David Held.
It is pertinent to point of that citizenship has considerably been influenced by the process of globalisation. Keeping in mind the wide and far-reaching impact of globalisation on citizenship-both in the developing as well as developed world the authors have made sincere and vigorous efforts to investigate in deep, the diverse dimensions of citizenship-legal-political and economic-and the real and potential challenges for it in the post-cold war international order.
