Summary: Rural non farm sector has attracted the attention of rural development thinkers and policy makers after its phenomenal growth during the 1980s, still there are expectations that this sector can provide employment to a large number of rural people provided it is supported by policy. But the sector is very diverse and therefore not amenable to blanket policy treatment. This paper looks at one of its very important subsector namely timber-based (wood and wood products) industry in rural sector.
