Since the anvil of First Plan, small and rural industries are gaining importance. However, the tempo of development picked up only during the sixties. Small industry is occupying a pivotal position in Indian economy, since it provides relatively larger employment for a given unit of investment.
The small engineering industry, in particular, is becoming more important as it helps in manufacturing motor machines, tools and provide servicing facilities to large and small industries. In other words, the small engineering industry serves as a catalyst.
