ECONOMIC ARITHMETIC, as conceived by the author, is a considerably broader discipline than economic statistics in the usual sense of the phrase. On the static side, the large corpus of official data known loosely as • the national-income statistics' has now developed to such an extent that its comprehension involves the application of a definite acquired expertise. On the dynamic side, the measurement of changes in the overall physical productive activity of the nation involves a wide range of difficulties associated with the theory and practice of economic index numbers. This book has therefore two prime objectives. First, to provide an introductory manual to these broader aspects of economic arithmetic just mentioned. Second, to bring the discussion of all branches of the subject-including orthodox statistical analysis-into closer integration with economic theory.
