Summary: This book is intended to serve as an introduction primarily for non-Americans to the politics and government of the United States. Most of the available introductory volumes are written for Americans and assume that the reader has the background knowledge of national politics that one absorbs by growing up in a country and going to school there. This book makes no such assumptions. I have tried to stand back a bit from my own country to see what in its political institutions and behaviour would seem most striking, puzzling or amusing to someone from another political culture.
