This book comprises articles selected from Professor Bhaskaran's occasional writings over the last twenty-five years. Professor Bhaskaran was engaged from 1960 to 1964 in clarifying the social bases and traditional sanctions of Indian politics since independence. Most of his contributions during this period relate to that theme to which, incidentally, this volume owes its title. In the article, The Political Situation in India, the author deals with the basic predicament of the country resulting from trying to erect a liberal democratic government on collective foundations. In Approaches to the Study of Politics in India' the author spells out the constituent themes of Indian politics-caste, religion, and The article on The Philo sophical Basis of Indian Foreign Policy' is a unique inquiry into the cultural roots of our foreign policy. 'Draft Constitution of India', written in 1948, anticipates most of the diffi culties which the constitution has since ran into. The article on The Indian Intellectual and Communism' inquires into the social roots and ideological affiliations of intellectuals in India and the crystallisation of social and political attitudes in that class. Besides there are articles dealing with the philosophy of sarvodaya, national integration, the language issue and democratic socialism in India.
