Public Enterprises played a dominant role in the strategies and policies of developing countries with Governments playing the role of investors, entrepreneurs and businessmen. This book objectively analyses the issues relating to the manner in which the Public Enterprises have operated in discharging their pre-determined goals, objectives, economic and efficient use of scarce resources in promoting socio-economic goals of Governments and in imparting. commercial viability. These issues are highly relevant for policy makers in the developing countries. The Public Enterprises in India are plagued with severe inefficiencies and financial losses. There is an urgent need to reform and restructure the Public Enterprises to improve their economic viability and entrepreneurial operations. The Public Enterprises will fail to play their developmental role effectively in new liberalised economic regime without acquiring competitiveness. Public Enterprises will have to act as commercial entity rather than as Government Departments. The goals and objectives of the Public Enterprises must be very clearly defined alongwith the internal and external linkages. A dedicated and committed management having market orientation and avoiding delays in implementation will prove to be an asset.
