Summary: We have incurred numerous debts of gratitude to many people. First, we would thank Professor F. F. Ridley who provided us with the original idea for such a book as this and who has continually encouraged us to reach the end of the long road to offering a completed manuscript for publication. Second, we are grateful to Richard Chapman, Anthony Beck and Robert Kilroy-Silk for reading various parts of the manuscript and offering invaluable comments. Finally, we recognize the support of our wives, who kept our lives in order while we sat and pondered universal truth. Of course, we alone are responsible for errors of fact and interpretation. We hope that the chapters which follow will be useful to students and teachers who are wondering about the relevance and adequacy of the discipline of political science.
