A study of slums-one of the major problems in urban society is most interesting and revealing. This work is the report of an investigation conducted in two slums in Mysore City in the years 1965-1966. Uncontrolled movement of population, indiscriminate location of business establishments and lack of efficient civic administration have resulted in their rapid growth. Congestion, overcrowding, inadequate civic amenities such as drinking water, conservancy services, drainage, sewage etc., and want of proper facilities for community life, healthy recreational and cultural activities have to a considerable extent deteriorated the living conditions in the slums and contributed to a lot of social disorganisation in the urban community.
