Summary: For making a comparative assessment of the levels of social, educational and economic development attained by the various sectors of population (viz., the Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes and Non-Scheduled communities), the Cultural Research Institute was entrusted with in 1967 a major research project on Village Survey' as advised by Shri K. Sen, LC.S., the then Member Board of Revenue and Secretary of the Scheduled Castes & Tribes Welfare Department. Altogether 57 villages from 9 districts of the State of West Bengal were surveyed for the purpose. Findings in respect of individual districts have so far been published by the Institute in four volumes. The Late Prof. N. K. Bose, the then Commissioner for Scheduled Castes & Scheduled Tribes of India, took much interest towards this project and published a note relating to this survey along with tables containing findings of individual districts in his annual report of 1969-70. Once, during his visit in the Institute he expressed his desire to implement this type of survey at all-India level through different Research Institutes, Organisations as well as his own organisation of Commissioner's office.
